Dr. Jian Wu is an assistant professor of Computer Science at Old Dominion University (ODU). He directs the Applied Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing System Labs (LAMP-SYS). He is also a member of the Web Science Digital Library (WS-DL) Research Group.

Before joining ODU in 2018, Dr. Wu was an assistant teaching professor at the Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Wu earned his PhD degree in Astronomy and Astrophysics in 2011.

From 2012 to 2016, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow with Dr. C. Lee Giles and as the technical leader of the CiteSeerX project at the Pennsylvania State University.

Dr. Wu’s research interests include natural language processing and understanding, scholarly big data, information retrieval, and digital libraries. His research was supported by NSF, IMLS, DARPA, and Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Dr. Wu was elected as a member of the board of directors of NDLTD in 2022. He was the Co-PI of the IMLS-supported project on mining ETDs. In collaboration with Bill Ingram and Dr. Ed Fox, Dr. Wu advised PhD, master’s, and undergraduate students at ODU on various ETD-related topics, focusing on data acquisition, segmentation, user interface, and data quality improvement. He co-advised several students at Virginia Tech on research projects and theses.
